Minnesota Trout Fishing
by Jim Wernimont I sit here in my office this morning, looking at the two holes in my thumb, asking myself is it worth it? I took my Eldest Nephew trout fishing for the first time. He never landed a trout until now. I hope I didn't spoil him since every browner he caught was over 14 inches with one reaching 16 inches! There’s more to live bait rigging than meets the eye. The concept sounds simple enough; Take a sliding sinker, add a leader, hook on some live bait, and you’re in business. It’s a presentation that’s extremely effective when walleyes are holding on classic walleye structure, like sunken islands, humps, underwater points, break lines and proverbial drop offs. Precision rigging is a way to capitalize on that very scenario, and maximize your chances for success. During the removal of his largest fish, I suddenly realized a treble had dislodged from the mouth of the trout, entering my thumb. ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH!! NOOO GOOD! Fortunately, I had just borrowed him a rap of mine that I had crimped the barbs for Catch and release season. I still had to pull the hook back out the way she came, riding over the crimped hook bump, OUCH! Was it worth it? I don't have to think long and hard about it. I just have to remember my nephew saying "That is the first trout I have ever caught" to come to a quick conclusion that YES it was darn well worth it!!! Take a kid fishing, take a friend fishing, take your dad or mom fishing or whom ever you can. Don't keep the fun to yourself!!! Keep the rods bendin'!!!
